Thirty years ago I tried to launch a professional newspaper/magazine writing career. Although I was published and was in demand, in the end I had not enough training, expertise and credentials to keep up the momentum.
Thirty years later, at the age of 63, desperately unhappy with other career choices, this turned out to be the work I was best at and most loved to do. So I enrolled in a two-year college journalism program to obtain the credentials and go for it again.
Somehow, for the next two years, I must survive higher education in partnership with a peer group old enough to be my grandchildren.
I am a thorough baby boomer in that I have chosen to live my life according to my own rhythms and am learning life lessons in a way that would have baffled my parents and grandparents. In typical baby boom fashion, I refuse to acknowledge the limitations of aging.
Because I want to be as frank and candid as possible I have not mentioned the name of the college, or town where it is, or the city where I live, so that the people who are in my stories will not be embarrassed and can keep their privacy.
